I started to call this the site of the week - but, then I thought, "Well, what if I have two sites in one week or no sites in two weeks?" So I decided to call it the site of the moment. Anyone can add to this, but the emphasis is sites for educators. Please share:
http://www.visuwords.com/ - Guess your could call it a dictionary on steroids. Or just a wiggly way to define words and see links to the many different meanings of a word. Students can type any word in and graphically view the nuances of a particular word. I have seen similar is programs you can buy, but this one is free at least for the moment.
http://www.readwritethink.org/ - Happened across this when I was looking for some information about diamante poetry. Tons of resources for great lessons in language arts for K-12.
http://www.wunderground.com - I was wondering what the wind speed was down here just a few moments ago. I don't know how it is where you folks are, but I felt like I was in the middle of a tropical depression - barely able to stand up outside. Anyway, I didn't get much info from weather.com, so I started googling and found the site. Don't know if you folks have seen it or not - but it has oodles of information including historical data on weather. The thing that I thought was really cool is that you can sign up for a weather blog that runs off the site. Aha! Could this be a way around the school district blocks on blogs? Anyway - thought it might be a neat blog for students to maintain on local weather conditions - maybe interesting weather photo of the week, etc. I wanted to share this with all of you out there. I know everyone does not teach K-12, but if you know someone who does, this would be a good site to share.
http://www.tcet.unt.edu/weblibrary2/ - This has a plethora of movies (talking heads) accompanying a variety of Power Point presentations. You won't be on the edge of your seat listening to them, but extensive (and free) content is covered.
http://www.zoho.com/ - Now this is Uber cool. Someone at a conference gave this to me. This would be Google docs on steroids. Don't know if it has the staying power of Google yet. But definitely a one-stop shop for wikis, documents, IM, web conferencing, sharing desktops, chatting, organizing, etc. Recommend you check it out. The wiki allows you to set up rights to each page - something that PB only does for the paying version.
